Saxenda (liraglutide) is a prescription, once-daily, self-injectable medicine approved for chronic weight management in adults and some adolescents with obesity or overweight and a weight-related health condition. It is intended for use in addition to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

How It Works

Saxenda contains the active ingredient liraglutide, which mimics a natural body hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). This hormone helps regulate appetite by signaling to the brain that you are full and less hungry, which can lead to reduced calorie intake and weight loss. It also slows down how quickly food leaves the stomach, helping you feel satisfied for longer.

Eligibility

Saxenda is a prescription-only medication and is typically prescribed to:
  • Adults with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or greater (obesity).
  • Adults with a BMI of 27 kg/m² or greater (overweight) who also have at least one weight-related medical problem (e.g., high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or obstructive sleep apnea).
  • Adolescents (ages 12-17) with a body weight above 132 pounds (60 kg) and obesity based on international cut-off points. 
Treatment with Saxenda should be stopped if a patient has not lost a certain percentage of initial body weight after 12 weeks on the maximum dose, as directed by a healthcare provider.

How to Use

Saxenda is administered via a pre-filled, multi-dose injection pen as a subcutaneous injection (under the skin) in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.
  • Dosing Schedule: The starting dose is typically 0.6 mg once daily, which is gradually increased over several weeks to the maintenance dose of 3.0 mg daily to minimize gastrointestinal side effects.
  • Administration: It can be used at any time of day, with or without food, but should ideally be at the same time each day. The injection site should be rotated with each use.
  • Storage: Unopened pens must be stored in the refrigerator. After the first use, the pen can be stored in the refrigerator or at room temperature (below 86°F/30°C) for up to 30 days. Do not freeze Saxenda.
Common Side Effects
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal in nature and may decrease over time. They include:
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation.
  • Headache, dizziness, and fatigue.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • Injection site reactions.
Serious Side Effects & Warnings
Saxenda carries a Boxed Warning for the risk of thyroid C-cell tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), observed in rodent studies. It is not known if this occurs in humans.
Patients should also be monitored for other serious risks, including:
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
  • Severe allergic reactions.
  • Gallbladder problems.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • Dehydration leading to kidney problems.
  • Depression or thoughts of suicide.
